This year the verse 1 Thessalonians 5:18 popped out at me in several different ways. Early in the year I decided to write this verse above my kitchen sink (where I spend a lot of time) so that I can remember to give thanks for many different things, including dirty dishes.
In May I went to a Beth Moore LifeWay conference and in each seat there was a different Bible verse and of all the verses in the Bible in all the seats in the Giant center at Hershey this verse was sitting and waiting for me!
Later in the summer at our Bible study we watched the video series from Ann Voskamp titled One Thousand Gifts. After we got past Ann’s sultry voice and poetic nature we learned how we can find peace and joy in the chaos of life by finding things to be thankful for in the middle of it all.
Currently we are finishing up Children of the Day. This Bible study covers both 1st and 2nd Thessalonians. This means that 1 Thessalonians 5:18 was covered as well.
As many times as I saw this verse written here and there, what Beth Moore’s Bible study showed me was that the verse says DOESNT say “Give thanks FOR all circumstances” It says, “Give thanks IN all circumstances” What a difference!
I found that it really truly does help to keep your negative thoughts, fears, worries, envy, discontentment and resentment away when you tell God what you are thankful for in that moment or at any moment. When I took the 2 seconds to tell Jesus “Thank You” for the dishes, laundry, food, car, sleep, parking spots, paid bills, electricity…etc etc etc, I have become more aware of His love for me and His presence in my life.
I want to be a thankful person and learn to love God more and better and I think Giving Thanks is an easy but powerful way of doing that.
Ann Voskamps series challenged us to come up with 1000 things to be thankful for in a year. She used good ol’ paper and pen. I am going to try to come up with a 1000 “thanks” as well, except I’m going to use Instagram. Can it be done? I think so! I wont bore everybody with all 1000 pics, but I will try to post frequently and share my thanks and at the end of it all, I’m going to try to combine it all together somehow. So stay tuned for that 🙂
One verse that I recite to myself is this:
“Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.” God will help me see what there is to be thankful for and to thank Him for it.
