It was time.
Time to actually do something.
Time to lose these last 10 pounds. They were not going away on their own.
Reducing calories alone wasn’t cutting it anymore. I have to do some cardio. I would LOVE to do Zumba but it is PRICEY in these parts and I cant go just anytime. So I came to the realization that I have to do something drastic, something dreadful, something unspeakable.
I. Have. To. Run.
I hate running. H-A-T-E running. But a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do.
So I asked a friend of mine that runs so often it seems as though it is something she enjoys doing, what did she do to get herself motivated to run that first time.
She told me she signed up for a 5k. Spending the money was one motivator and the extreme desire to not be the last one crossing the finish line was the other. And now she runs in 5ks every 5 minutes. Okay not every 5 minutes…but A LOT!!!
Well that’s not really for me.
I know what will motivate me.
Clothes. I bought some pretty running clothes.
They just sat there.
A running app might help me.
Workout Mix seems to be a really good app.
I wouldn’t know because I haven’t used it yet.
Then I found it. The app to get me moving…
Zombies. Run! Its basically a story telling app that you participate in by running. That is what I need. Entertainment!!! Its funny, adventurous and almost a little bit scary. If you run too slow the mob o’ zombies can catch up with you, in surround sound!
So I did it. I ran. Well, I ran a little, walked a lot and shuffled at times.
If I can run once, I can totally do it again. I signed up for a local 5k. But not just any 5k. A ZOMBIE RUN 5K. Which was about 10 days away.
That gives me 10 days to run before the race.
I managed to fit in a Zumba class and 2 more runs in before the big event.
I wish I had more runs on my belt before I ran the 5k. But alas, I did not. I could not back out now, I’m going with friends and I spent the money and too many people knew about it now.
In this particular 5K, runners wear a flag football style belt with 3 flags on it. Some local folk dress up as zombs and try to steal your flags. If you have flags when you cross the finish line you are a survivor. If you lose all your flags you are dead…But you still run.
Not only am I just trying to run and not be last, I am also dodging zombies while sprinting and screaming. My energy was zapped very quickly.
Needless to say, I lost my flags fairly quickly. At least the zombies stopped chasing me and I could just concentrate on finishing.
Or so I thought. Some of the towns folk really got into their zombie roles and trotted along with me at times, breathing and growling and snarling.
After about 41 minutes I crossed the finish line.
YEAH! It was hard, but it was fun and the running community is so encouraging!
I would do it again. I NEED to do it again. Because I still haven’t lost those last 10 pounds after running a total of 4 times.
Everyone says “WHAT!?” I know! Its crazy. I gotta go back out there again.
Here is a visual of how scared I was of the zombies.
I promise you I really was running. Not fast, but I was moving. I just had a quick moment of panic.
Here are some pics after the run. You can see how creepy some of the zombies were. Perhaps you would panic too!
The following ecard says it best…
And If Im lucky enough a photographer will capture the moment.
